This collection of texts is intended to give students an overview of the American South. The American South ist often considered to be the most distinctive region of the USA and is surrounded by a mythology which both attracts and repels those from outside. This collection looks at the following issues (among others):

the mythology of the South / slavery / the Civil War / civil rights / the "New South" / the Bible Belt / country music

Texts from a variety of genres (novel, short story, poem, song, newspaper article, webzine) offer an interesting and varied selection for the students. Among the writers that are represented are Bill Bryson, Abel Meeropol ("Strange Fruit"), Langston Hughes, Alice Walker, Booker Washington, Maya Angelou and William Faulkner ("A Rose for Emily").
