The story of Uncle Tom, a black slave living in North America, was the best selling novel of the nineteenth century. Harriet Beecher Stowe's moving account of the life of a simple man and his struggle to find good in the face of enourmous cruelty and suffering brought the harsh reality of slavery on the cotton platations of the Deep South into the homes of all Americans. President Abraham Lincoln, in the midst of the American Civil War, is reported to have said that Mrs Stowe was "the little lady who wrote the book that made this great war." It almost certainly helped to put an end to slavery.
Can be read after 3 years of English.
Easy Classics - a new series of well-loved novels from the treasury of English and American literature, retold and abridged by native speakers for learners of English. All titles are richly illustrated and annotated.
